Why Do You Need to Hire a Website Designer?

Why hire someone for your website design?

So you’re wondering whether to use a DIY website builder like Wix ($) or hire a professional web designer ($$??). I’m biased since I build websites, but there ARE times I’ll point a potential client toward Squarespace instead of WebbDesignz.

Why would I do that? For one, most websites follow the same structure—home, about, contact. Maybe a blog. DIY website builders have gotten very good at building systems around these basic patterns. So good that you can start adding your home, about, and contact pages (contact form included) the same day you pay for your domain.

Building a new system for every client would be overkill—not to mention incredibly expensive, with plenty of room for human error. So I refer those folks to DIY platforms.

That said, here’s when DIY site builders aren’t the answer.

First, the most important distinction: DIY website builders aren’t a long-term investment. The fact that they run maybe $10/mo is a sign they’re not meant to be a business expense. They’re great when you need a website really fast and really cheap.

You’re also going to hit design and functionality limits. If those limits hurt you now, they’ll hurt a lot more later, when your business expands.

If you have more than a few weeks and a couple thousand dollars to invest in your business, you should consider hiring a designer.

Why?

You’ll likely see a bigger ROI with a designer.

Yes, website builders hand you every tool to build the site of your dreams… but Microsoft Word hands you every tool to write the next great American novel, and when’s the last time you did that?

You could spend 10 hours building your site. Then another 10 tweaking it. Then learn it doesn’t work the way you wanted, or doesn’t portray you the way you’d like. That’s time you could have spent elsewhere.

Need to sell things in a shop? Collect email addresses? Look classy and elegant? Convince people to trust you with their data? Someone out there knows how to make the tools do exactly what you need. A designer knows how to reach business goals through design—proximity, color, shape, balance, and more.

To sum it up…

Use a website builder when you need a site up quick and cheap. Hire WebbDesignz when you need your website to earn a return.
